Explain Briefly About Traffic Shaping

If the data can be transmitted at a more uniform rate, congestion can be decreased. An open loop method which can manage the congestion by forcing the packets to be transmitted at uniform rate is called as Traffic Shaping.

Traffic shaping is about regulating the average rate of data transmission. Until the hosts send certain limit rate of data, traffic shaping reduces congestion. This certain limit may be of importance while transferring the file but plays a vital role in the case of real time data (audio, video etc) transfer.

Traffic Shaping is more widely used in ATM networks. Monitoring a traffic flow is called Traffic Policing. This traffic shaping can be easily applied to virtual circuit subnets.
